I’ve often
heard that love is the most important thing in our lives…and while that
certainly is backed up by scripture, I will offer another trait that I find
most appealing. It is loyalty.
I value it
and I try to model it.
Let me give
you a few examples. Don’t ever say anything derogatory about my wife, my
kids….or my extended family. I can do
that. You can’t because if I allow that, it is being disloyal.
I grew up in
a town about two hours from here and while I left there with somewhat bitter
feelings over 20 years ago…..don’t be badmouthing it. Same goes for Fairfield.
I have decided it is my home and speaking ill of the culture here is a
non-starter for me.
I am an
American and I’m damned proud of that. You can speak ill of our politics and
decisions made by people in power----but do not say anything that resembles an
anti-American comment to me or you will have an argument on your hands.
Loyalty
starts with family….extends to your high school, college and community and
should be extended to your church and your place of employment. If you follow
this practice, you will have a satisfying life.
Here’s
something I have always said. I’ve never been a philanderer---never shamed my
wedding vows….and that is a by-product of feeing about loyalty. A man, or a
woman, who can run around on their spouse, can never be totally trusted. If you
can look into the eyes of your significant other and lie in a convincing way---
lying to your boss is a piece of cake.
Love is
important---I’ll grant you---but the trait I always look for when I’m looking
for a friend or an employee---is loyalty.
