I find the
political correctness cops to be vexing. There doesn’t appear to be any form of
entertainment or speech that isn’t analyzed and berated by the PC movement.
I offer up
an article by a publication called “Bustle” where the crosshairs are laid on
the 1990s comedy Seinfeld, which has flourished in reruns ever since.
The article
calls into question several of the more memorable Seinfeld episodes calling
them offensive in 2019.
If you are
familiar with the popular sitcom, you’ll recognize “The Soup Nazi” episode….an
episode about gay and lesbian lifestyles….about one of the characters who liked
staring at cleavage...The article points out 13 jokes that it considered
inappropriate today.
I was ready
for the writer to say Seinfeld was as offensive as the 1950s Amos and Andy
sitcom. They didn’t. I’m grateful.
Here’s what
I have to say…
Get a life.
The Soup Nazi was not a Nazi..just an angry cook. The episode concerning alternate lifestyles actually won an award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for "its positive outlook on gay and lesbian relationships in the media."
I'm gonna pass on the staring at cleavage concern. Some things are better left unsaid.
I'm with comedian Tim Young who found the premise of the piece to be flawed. Young points out that Seinfeld ended its run with all of the main characters ending up in jail because they were malcontents who interacted poorly with a kind and thoughtful world.
In other words....this was an article "about nothing."
