Apparently
the band on the ill-fated Titanic continued to play in the ballroom right up to
the end. They didn’t have to….they weren’t part of the crew. They just bravely
stayed and did their job to calm the doomed.
…..which
brings me to a story we ran on our news yesterday. ….
The new
Governor---still a week from being sworn in---asked for a change in state law
to bump up the salaries of all of Cabinet members by 15-percent.
The example
used was the paltry paycheck of the director of the Illinois State Police. He
only earns $140k a year. How do you dry these crocodile tears when the income
of the median household in the state is well under half of that salary?
Here’s the
most unbelievable part of the story. J.P. Pritzker expected Democratic support.
He got it. And he got the Republicans
to support bumping salaries. The leader of the House Republicans said they wanted to get along with the Governor----a
gesture of cooperation---a piece pipe that I promise will get rammed back down
their throats at the appropriate time.
Giving big
shots in the Pritzker administration a raise is sort of like telling the
Titanic band to find the appropriate song for sinking. This puppy is going
down. We’ve already hit the iceberg in the form of billions in debt.
Is there any
talk of belt-tightening in Springfield? Nope.
Talk of new taxes?
Yep----everywhere. We’re going to knock it stiff by taxing recreational pot and
counting the odometers on our cars.
What’s it
all mean?
You and I make
up the strings section…. And we are playing “Nearer My God To Thee”…
