We all want
to find a way to stop mass killings. Everyone looks towards Washington and
legislation when I keep thinking, “evil doesn’t follow the law and evil is
pulling the trigger.” The most stringent gun laws in America----in places like Chicago---do
not prevent multiple shootings each and every weekend.
Here’s a
fact. So many people were shot this weekend in Chicago, one hospital had to
briefly stop taking patients. The media is focused on Dayton and El Paso—but 46
were shot in Chicago and seven were killed. Illinois is ranked number eight in
the United States in restrictive gun laws.
Laws do not stop
people from getting guns. There are an estimated 400-million weapons in this country….most a crowbar away from getting
into the hands of a murderer.
I understand
the desire to have Congress do something----anything about the violence. One
proposal would nationalize the “Red Flag” law, which is already in place here
in Illinois. It allows the courts to take someone’s guns if they are a proven
threat to themselves or others. These laws are fraught with potential abuses….but
they appear to have support on both sides of the aisle.
Understand,
the red flag law in Illinois allows gun seizure for only two weeks, or until a
judge hears the case. I don’t think this proposal will change anything…but I
would like to see the two political parties agree on something…..anything. So I
support the proposed legislation.
Take a
moment and read the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
It’s pretty plain.
“The right
of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
There’s not
a lot of wiggle.
