Last month,
as I walked out of a class I was teaching at Missouri Baptist University, one
of my students pulled up my Facebook page and commented:
“Your wife
is way too good lookin’ for you.”
I couldn’t
argue. I’ve known that for years. Today is our wedding anniversary.
I met Carol
while I was the president of Frontier Community College. She was wrapping up
her degree with a dream to be accepted at the University of Southern Indiana’s
Occupational Therapy program.
She was working
at Airtex and was smart enough to see the handwriting on the wall. So she
enrolled at the college, single, an empty nester, looking to become a professional
healthcare practitioner.
I believe
she was 42 when she went back to school….and when people found out her goal,
they’d say:
“Carol, you
are going to be 47 before you get that master’s degree,”
To that, her
response was: “I’m going to be 47 anyway. Might as well be an occupational
therapist.
She was
accepted at USI right before we married and completed her degree while we lived
in Texas.
Besides
being a wonderful partner in my life, Carol is the perfect example of the value
of Frontier Community College. Without FCC, there would have been no way for
her to pursue her goal.
And more
troubling to me; we might not have met.
In this
community, be grateful that two organizations continue to flourish----FCC and
Fairfield Memorial Hospital. They provide jobs, service and more importantly,
they offer hope for many people within the sound of my voice.
Now that I
think of it…
My student
was not trying to insult me. She was merely pointing out an obvious fact.
Carol is way
too good lookin’ for me.
