Reflection..and Rejection.

The first month of work here is about in the books…and there have been a number of very interesting moments.

Like the obituaries…..I don’t think it is appropriate to list someone as “your favorite mother.” Then there was the person who listed their parakeet as a surviving family member. Sorry, Tweety isn’t gonna make the noon news here.

I enjoyed the guy who said my Cardinal commentary was probably why there were so many Carmi and Vincennes ads on the air. Actually that is because we own radio stations there too. Has nothing to do with the Cubs.

Or the fella who took offense to my view that Carbondale was dying. He said I need to “get a life.”

Dude, take a road trip.  They have pulled life support on Carbondale.

It wasn’t my plan to be the news director during this first month, but I have greatly enjoyed it. New York is the city that never sleeps----I gotta tell you, Fairfield is asleep at 4:00 a.m. when I drive through downtown on my way east to the hill and the station.

The news job, which will humanely be handed over to Jeff Vaughan later next week, forced me to re-learn Fairfield in a crash course. I went to the county fair, interviewed interesting people like the mayor, fair officials and young city leaders asking them what the city needs to do as we move forward.

More importantly, I got done with the interviews and asked them what we need to do----here at the radio station to help them help the community. And they have been gracious in their comments and ideas. I am proud of the efforts of the staff in listening to my vision for where we are going. It has also helped to have someone like Dave Land as an advisor. Was that a good move, or what?

We will continue to work at improving the product. And we will get there.
In the meantime, like Richard Nixon, I want to be perfectly clear.

Carbondale is dead.

  1. Just remember your station charges good money for obituaries to be on the newscast. I would NOT pay the Funeral Home to place an obituary on the radio these days. The quality of the obituaries has declined. I know folks used to pay $40 for the obituaries. Former funeral director here. For some of our community the obituaries are a news must. You won't find get any points here by hacking on the obituaries. You are paid to run them. Half the time you forget to name the Funeral Home name having the services.
