Friend of the station Ken Otey likes to stir it up on social
media by posting thought provoking questions about the community and region. I
took particular interest to only of his Facebook polls recently where he posed
the question---“”If I were Mayor of Fairfield, I would------fill in the blank.”
The replies were diverse to say the least. One popular theme
was the physical appearance of the city with ideas for improvements. Here are a
few of the comments….
One person said there are unsightly weeds and trash in
several locations and unpainted curbs and parking lines.
Another wanted updates to the antiquated city liquor laws to allow for sports bars and micro breweries.
-Other ideas included---Using the nearly vacant former People's National Bank building as a small business incubator to develop small businesses in our area.
-Capitalizing on our strong agricultural footprint to attract ag related industries such as a pork or beef processing plant…and a facility that makes corn syrup, livestock feed, or utilizes our vast grain production.
-Addressing the former Lakeside reservoir and beginning the process to restore it.
-Exploring the possibility of employing a City Manager to oversee the daily operations of the city.
-Work to improve recreational activities to attract
younger people.
-Limiting Trick or Treating to one night or having one large “Trunk or Treat” in the city park.
-Revisiting the golf cart/ATV proposition.
-Limiting Trick or Treating to one night or having one large “Trunk or Treat” in the city park.
-Revisiting the golf cart/ATV proposition.
And finally---Pursuing the development of a recreation center with an indoor pool. And perhaps the best of all "Move Fairfield out of Illinois."
One writer hoped the Mayor and City Council members would see
this Facebook post. Well, now they have at least heard a few of the ideas.
Worth pondering.
