It is said
there is no honor among thieves.
That bounced
around in my brain last Friday when I watched Illinois’ sitting Governor throw
the Speaker of the House under the bus. J.B. Pritzker said, if allegations of
wrongdoing are true, Mike Madigan should resign. Speaker Madigan has ruled
Illinois most of the last 37 years. Lately, he has been the focus of a federal
investigation into alleged illegal bribes from Commonwealth Edison. The Chicago
utility has already agreed to pay $200-million dollar in fines for its part.
This is all
pretty interesting coming from Pritzker, who gave Madigan a check for
$7-million dollars just prior to the last election. The money was used to
bankroll the party’s continued dominance in Illinois. It was paid out to
Democrats running for house seats.
I’m thinking
Madigan is too smart to directly take a cash bribe. But his bag man is caught
up in this…and if he flips on the boss….there’s nothing that can save the
speaker.
Bad timing
when Democrats are pulling in the same direction hoping to dupe voters into changing
the state constitution in November allowing a progressive tax.
Pritzker is
doing his own dance with the feds. The
Chicago Sun-Times says prosecutors are drilling down on his tax-related toilet
troubles.
Reminds me
of the famous quote from Paul Powell, the corrupt former Illinois Secretary of
State who once said….”There’s only one thing worse than a defeated
politician….and that’s a broke one.”
