Six Years

“We remember Megan.”

The signs are popping up everywhere. They are being sold to raise money for the construction of a shelter at New Hope School where Megan Nichols attended.

You know the story. Six years ago last week she disappeared. Left behind her phone, which was completely reset…and a note to her mother saying “I love you, but I will never be happy here. Don’t look for me.”

The note led authorities to believe she might have run away. But then, in December 2017, her remains were found south of town. The FBI took full control of the investigation and took everything from the scene.

There’s been only silence since then. The FBI doesn’t return calls from hometown radio stations wanting to ask if the investigation is ongoing. There’s nothing said anymore. Her family hasn’t even been able to have a proper funeral for her. No one knows how she died. Most people you talk to have a theory that involves foul play. That chilling speculation is that there is a murderer who walks among us. There’s nothing to prove….or disprove that.

Six years. Megan would be 21 now and on the cusp of her adult life. Instead she is a mystery novel without a final chapter. Everyone who knew and loved her demand an epilogue. There must be closure.

In the meantime I dropped some money off to the folks conducting the fundraiser. I told them to keep the sign.

There’s no forgetting Megan.
