Let's look at
two facts and see if we can see if there is a link between them.
Violent
crime is going through the roof in America. At the same time, several major
cities are reducing their police forces….trimming their numbers in the face of
this violence.
How do you
rationalize these two headlines? This is clearly an attack on our way of life.
You can’t prosper if you are worried about being gunned down in your
neighborhood… and yet there is so little coverage of it. It is astounding to
me.
Do you
really think law and order will re-establish itself with teams of mental
health, housing officials and educators answering calls in the neighborhoods of
major U.S. cities? I don’t.
Let’s be
clear, the George Floyd killing was despicable. Justice will be served on the attacker
and the officers who allowed it to happen. Let’s look at the other side of this
equation. Twenty-seven officers have
been murdered this year in the line of duty. Nobody is marching for them.
Where’s the
leadership on this topic? I give the mayor of Chicago credit on this one. Chicago
is a battleground and she is not pulling in her police. Nine kids under 18 have
been killed this month in the Windy City alone. ..and Mayor Lori Lightfoot is
not proposing police cuts. She is bucking the trend. Cuts have already occurred
in Philly, Baltimore, Portland. New York cut their police one billion dollars.
I visited there once. Not going back.
Increasing
violence….decreasing law enforcement.
Unarmed
social workers aren’t the answer…
