Cleaning The Front Porch

It is not often that my views and those of Wayne County Press Editor and Publisher Tom Mathews Jr. align so exactly.

I want to echo and amplify on  his column of last Thursday when he called out a few businesses on our main thoroughfares, claiming their junky appearance is embarrassing to the rest of us.

True.

But I continue to hope that the current city council has a plan to directly deal with this image problem for Fairfield. I believe they do with the establishment of a new municipal court. Previously, taking a complaint through the circuit court to force the cleanup of derelict cars and neglected yards was costly. Too costly.

But the advent of a municipal court is a game changer. Start it and start papering up the owners of the embarrassing real estate in this town.

An outsider driving through this town might think all of us don’t care…and drive on. Not gonna stop in this junky town.

Tom Jr. pointed out that Carmi had no such problem. I’ll take his word on that.

Main and Delaware are Fairfield’s front porch. Would you want a junk car on your front porch? If you answer yes, it is my fervent hope that you are one of the first on the new municipal court docket.

Ultimately this duty falls on the mayor and members of the city council. They are elected to enforce ordinances already in the book .

Let's get to it.
