Fun At City Hall

I don’t think it would be fun being the mayor.

It certainly would not be fun in Fairfield for many reasons. But Brent Maguire never gives me the impression that he regrets being sworn in a little over two years ago. When I call him, he calls back. He doesn’t dodge anything….and there’s plenty flying his way.

Since I’ve been here, there was the dispute over family members riding in police cars and Goosegate….and…

Then you have some pretty hacked off school administrators who were promised 40-percent of the TIF take. Maguire stopped that. He’s not getting any love from them.

We are in the midst of a lousy winter where snow plows rip up pavement and create miserable roads. The most traveled and most needy roads are Main and Delaware. He isn’t even responsible for their maintenance….the state is. And they say they won’t be resurfaced until 2021. But he gets the guff.

You don’t like your utility bill? The Mayor is an easy target.

You get the idea? This is hard work….especially when you have few resources.
He’s got a group of people banging on the city to invest in the Atkinson Forest. To that, he did the politically correct thing----he created a committee and asked for a recommendation. It’s coming. Pro or con, there will be unhappy people.

There are a number of council seats up in the April 2nd city council election, and those running are all talking about all the aforementioned issues.

So is it enjoyable being the Mayor of Fairfield?

I asked him. He said yes……most of the time.

I think you have to admire his tenacity.
