There was
another mass shooting last week….this time in Aurora, Illinois.
Immediately,
the call went up for tougher gun laws. The Chicago Sun-Times editorialized
----“Until gutless lawmakers---mostly Republicans---stand up to the NRA or get
run out of office, we’re stuck.”
But they
shamelessly miss the whole point of the story.
Let me
recap. Angry worker is being fired from his job…pulls out a gun and kills five.
He then was shot and killed by police. The shooter had six arrests in Aurora
for domestic battery and violating an order of protection. He was also a
convicted felon for aggravated assault that should have prevented him from
buying his gun.
He bought
the gun back in 2014 after being issued a FOID card. He passed a background
check to get the FOID card despite having a felony in Mississippi. It was only
after he tried to get a concealed carry permit that the felony showed up to
state investigators. They promptly voided his FOID card….but that is where
everything fell apart. Nothing else happened.
Where’s the
failure? Not with the law. Not with the NRA. The fault is with a state that
failed to determine the guy had an out-of-state felony before they gave him an
Illinois Firearm Owners Identification card.
I don’t want
felons with handguns and neither should you.
But is this really the fault of “gutless”
Republicans? I don’t think so. I think it was the failure of the state which issued
this guy a card despite the fact he was a felon. Five people died because of
that error.
Put the blame where it belongs.
