Opportunity Knocks At Annual Parade

Tomorrow, Fairfield will once again honor our veterans with a parade through downtown.

I would like to suggest a few things…..just a few ideas to ponder.

Featured in convertibles will be seven gentlemen, ranging in age from 92-to-100.
They fought in World War II and represent what Tom Brokaw labeled “The Greatest Generation” in American history. In his book of the same name, Brokaw wrote:

“It is a generation that, by and large, made no demands or homage from those who followed and prospered economically, politically, and culturally because of its sacrifices. It is a generation of towering achievement and modest demeanor.”

These men and their colleagues faced an overwhelming challenge early in their lives and won continued freedom for all of us who have followed. Now, in their twilight, I think there are diminishing opportunities to let them know of our gratitude.

Clifford Reever, who works so hard on this annual parade, says he thinks it would be wonderful if people would step forward along the parade route to shake the hands of the greatest generation as they slowly roll by. I think that form of praise is certainly deserved.  

Our history is leaving us. These men and this event could give you the opportunity to do something profound. A simple “thank you” would suffice.

And one other thing…..while you are standing along the parade route tomorrow afternoon….When the flag of this country…which will lead this parade….comes by…. Please show it respect. Take off your ball cap….maybe put your hand over your heart.

I do believe the flag symbolizes the sacrifices of all generations who have died to keep it waving free.
