61-year-old
high school basketball referee Kenny Culp from the Paducah area was calling an
AAU tournament last weekend when he made a call that prompted a form of savagery.
40-year-old
Kenyon Menifield pummeled the referee. Police reports indicate that the referee
turned and walked away from the coach. That prompted a beat down.
Culp was
life-flighted to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. The injuries were
extensive. He suffered a broken collarbone, a concussion, swollen eye and
bleeding on the brain. Menifield fled the scene and was apprehended by police
at a McCracken County Kentucky hotel where he was arrested. He claims he
delivered only one punch. If that’s true we need to get him on the front line
in Afghanistan. He’s the latter day Captain America.
Here’s where
the story takes an unpredictable turn. While the ref lay in the hospital from
the vicious attack, police only charged the coach with a misdemeanor. I’m
outraged.
Coaches and
parents have to learn to respect the people who don whistles and get paid
little for their time. Most referee because of their love of sports. In this
case, Culp was probably getting fifty bucks to get his lights punched out by a
punk with anger issues.
This is
obviously a felony. Culp was knocked out. He has a brain bleed. The attacker
fled the scene. There must be severe penalties for this type of behavior. A
message must be sent to people unable to control their tempers that there are consequences.
A misdemeanor?
Insulting…
