Not Scared to Observe Halloween

I liked the way Fairfield dealt with the whole Trick-or-Treat issue this week. It was refreshing. Mayor Pro Tem Gary Moore said matter-of-factly there would be trick-or-treat for those  who chose to participate.

Here are the two things that have to happen. First, parents have to decide whether or not they want to risk putting their kids out there on October 30th and 31st. It is their decision.

I would hope they use discretion in selecting the homes they visit. Let me suggest they visit in their neighborhoods or with people they know. That’s the way it was with my kids back in the day. I didn’t unleash them on the entire community.

That brings me to the second part. You don’t have to participate if you are a homeowner. As Moore put it…..it is simple….turn your porch light off. That’s the clear signal to not knock on the door looking for treats.

We don’t have any little kids at our house if you aren’t counting my wife, who loves Halloween and will likely dress up and be on the porch personally welcoming whoever ambles up our steps.

I found the ease at which the city made the decision to be somewhat refreshing in the face of the cancel culture. We have given up so much since March. COVID-19 has robbed us of our American culture of free choice. It feels like literally everything has been cancelled in 2020. If you can’t Zoom it, you doom it.

But that didn’t happen on Tuesday night. Fairfield took a stand…

..which is a good thing.
