In one of
the most convoluted provocative bills I’ve seen in recent memory, a member of
the Illinois House of Representatives has filed a measure which would prevent
the state from forcing a pregnant state employee to go to another state that
doesn’t share our zest for abortion.
I know, its
like they don’t have enough to do in Springfield, what with tax increases and a
debt disaster looming….now we have to think through scenarios to shine a
spotlight on most of our neighboring states and our differences.
Rep. Daniel
Didech, from Buffalo Grove, says Illinois government employees should not have to
travel to states that “criminalize reproductive health.” Last Thursday the
representative proposed legislation naming 12 states----like Missouri, Indiana
and Kentucky---saying pregnant state workers should not be forced to travel on
state business there.
I wondered
why? Here’s Didech’s reasoning….He says he has a responsibility to protect
state employees. In that light, he believes a pregnant state employee, being
forced against her will, to go to a grant conference in, say, Evansville, would
be prevented from receiving necessary health care. For the love of God…
I got an
idea. You are a pregnant state employee and don’t feel well in Evansville. You
get in the car….zip…You are across the Wabash….and safe from those Indiana
hicks who just don’t understand reproductive rights.
I’m
mortified that this is what a state rep would dream up---a modified boycott---
of our less evolved neighbors.
In a
word….it wreaks.
