I don’t
think Hollywood could have written a more inspiring…or unlikely script. I’m
referring to the story of Jalen Hurts, a quarterback for the University of
Alabama. I think there are some lessons to take away from his life.
Understand,
he started most of the previous two seasons as the Crimson Tide’s signalcaller
until last year’s national title game when things went wrong. He got benched
when his team fell behind by two touchdowns. His replacement led the team to
victory----winning the job.
Hurts
entered this year, his junior year, as the back-up. Understand, this guy had
won 26-of-his 28 starts---but now he was just the understudy. He never
badmouthed the coaching staff. He never considered transferring. He put his
head down and worked his butt off to try and get better.
Eleven
months later, on the very same field, the Tide got behind in the fourth quarter
when the starting quarterback was injured. Enter Jalen Hurts.
Calmly he
guided his team to a game tying 16-play 80-yard drive. Then with the game on
the line, he bolted for a 15 yard touchdown run to beat Georgia in the SEC
championship game.
The lessons
are endless… You never ever quit….Hard work equals success…class and character
will always be rewarded.
A good
friend of mine, Shawn Balint, put it best. (Quote) “Parents, let your kid fail
so they can learn how to deal with it--and become better because of that
failure.”
Hurts was
even more succinct: “I put it in God’s hands and he handled it for me.”
I’ve never
been an Alabama fan….until now.
Even Alabama coach Nick Saban noted that relegating Hurts to his “back up” position was one of the most difficult of his career. But Hurts showed what a classy, stay-the-course team player he is. He stayed true to his Alabama team mates - and to himself. He’s a special person and will be a fine NFL star!
