Searching For Ultimate Justice

In a society geared to instant gratification, we find it very difficult to wait for anything…including justice.

The Grand Jury indictments involving the death of Megan Nichols are a case in point. This community did not forget the 15-year-old who went missing in 2014. . The discovery of her remains south of Boyleston three years later spawned the “Remember Megan” movement. Those signs all over the region memorialized her life.

Several things came to mind with the news of the arrest yesterday morning.

First, it was clearly an act of God that the remains were discovered at all. In a remote area of the county, a man looking for firewood stumbled on the shallow grave. Without that discovery, we would still be speculating on whether or not she was a runaway. That’s when the FBI got involved.

The discovery makes it plausible that there was forensic evidence which led to Wednesday’s arrest.

Another thought….if this case makes it to a jury, I really can’t think of a bigger trial in the modern history of Wayne County. At least not in the last 30 years.

One last thing…I saw a quote on social media that suggested the arrest provided “closure” for Megan’s family. I couldn’t disagree more. Wednesday’s news only provides the latest chapter in this case.

There really is no such thing as closure when you lose a child.
