I've been
very clear in my opposition to the state constitutional amendment on the ballot
next month here in Illinois. It is called “the fair tax” by the Governor who
has put over $50-million of his own dollars into an advertising effort to
convince you it is a great idea. It is also known as the progressive tax.
An
interesting thing happened yesterday when the state’s Democratic treasurer,
Michael Frerichs, cancelled a press conference because he feared questions
would arise about his own unfettered words. Frerichs cancelled the Chicago
presser when a story surfaced concerning his comments to a gathering of the Des
Plaines Chamber of Commerce back in June.
This is what
he said then:
“One thing
the progressive tax would do is make clear you can have graduated rates when
you are taxing retirement income. And, I think that’s something that’s worth
discussion.”
Yikes.
Candor is a killer.
Illinois
does not currently tax retirement income but Frerichs has spilled the beans.
The Democrats want the “fair” tax so they can pursue that line of cash.
The
treasurer instead issued a line of bull press release saying he opposed a
retirement tax in Illinois.
I have to
tell you….if this thing wins…and the Democrats try to institute a tax on my
retirement….I will join a group of gray panthers and circle the state capitol
in peaceful protest.
