If you
follow this commentary, you know, I am a baseball fan. But the lack of major
league action this summer has made me less dependent on television for my evening
entertainment.
For weeks, I
have followed the talks between the owners and players’ union…and I find myself
in total agreement with Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. Enough. These talks are
going nowhere and with the addition of racial unrest to go along with the
continuing pandemic, it's time to call the season.
The Wizard
made some compelling points in an interview this week with the St. Louis Post
Dispatch where he said he believed “it’s just not the right time,” to start
baseball.
The two
sides continue to negotiate…but I don’t like any of the current
proposals…..half a season starting in a couple of weeks…..or the owners' 50-game proposal. And all of the plans are in fan-less stadiums. I’d watch, but
it just wouldn’t be the same.
Baseball is
a game which marks summer. It’s like my calendar---Memorial Day is
one-fourth of the way in-----The Fourth of July is halfway---and Labor Day
sounds the final stretch. Anything less just doesn’t appeal to me.
Smith says
we deserve a full season. And that means Spring Training is a little over seven
months away.
…which is soon
enough for me.
