Probably the
hardest job I have during the weekday is writing this two minute commentary.
I do it knowing that for it to be worthwhile, I
have to take a stand. A stand that will not resonate with everyone. Then do it
while the country is reeling from civil unrest. It is not that easy…and
yesterday I was told my “white privilege” was showing.
I said “innocent businesses shouldn’t be
looted. Downtown's need not be battle zones.”
Let me tell
you what other social commentators said yesterday…
“The small
minority of folks who’ve resorted to violence in various forms, whether out of
genuine anger or mere opportunism are putting innocent people at risk,
compounding
the destruction of neighborhoods that are often already short on services and
investment and detracting from the larger cause.”
I couldn’t
agree more with President Obama.
Another
voice said, “all of us can calm this storm. Burning and looting are not good.
It does lead to more violence: violence begets violence.” Well said by the
niece of Dr. Martin Luther King…Alveda King.
One
commentator even went so far as to suggest that the violence and destruction in
this state was “absolutely organized and coordinated.”
I didn’t say
it. Chicago’s mayor did. I doubt anyone asked her to prove it.
And I doubt
anyone will suggest her opinion reveals her life as privileged.
