Last week
the Illinois Legislature approved, and passed on to the Governor, a bill that
makes it legal to sell cocktails-to-go. Mixed drinks for the road.
What could
possibly go wrong with this idea?
Who
sponsored this one, Representative Foster Brooks?
I’m
certainly not a proponent of teatotalism….but this is nothing but a way to help
out Chicago bars. I highly doubt it will help anyone here.
To be fair,
the mixed drinks must be in tamper-proof, sealed packages and must be stored in
the trunk or some other inaccessible area of the vehicle. But it makes me
wonder….why this soaked up time in a very short 3-day window for the
legislature?
It’s the
profit margin. In Chicago, an order for a burger and a Manhattan to go is the
best example. Half of the $12 burger is profit….but the Manhattan brings—cha-ching---$11
profit. In this part of Illinois, we
wouldn’t pay those prices for either.
The measure
actually was approved on a unanimous vote in the Senate. The House had some
dissenters.
I’m not
trying to say people are going to die because of this passage. I’m just saying,
it doesn’t seem to rise to the importance of passing a budget depending on
$5-billion dollars coming from Uncle Sam…or God knows …Chicago needing a
casino.
You
know….important stuff.
