What Happened To Music?

I will now make a sweeping statement and attempt to back it up.

Today’s music stinks.

Pretty easy for a 61-year-old who manages two music radio stations----one a classic rocker….one a classic country format.

My wife and I have divergent yet similar music tastes. We been on an extended pursuit we call the---“watching the rock bands that we couldn’t afford when we were 20 before they die tour.” Additionally, my wife is a disciple of George Strait. I’ve always said, “I have her heart…George has her interest.” So, I have watched the King many, many times. Yes, they all were commercial stars. But I can’t see the connection to today’s popular music.

I literally can’t find anything new to like. The closest thing I can appreciate are songs produced by today’s country artists who sound like the southern rockers of the 1970s. But even they are fleeting…When I hear rap in a country song----I envision Ferlin Husky rolling in his grave…and I move on.

I find the following hard facts to be quite disturbing---Rihanna has had 13 number one hits. Led Zeppelin had one. The cast of “Glee” has had more chart-toppers than the Beatles. I think it speaks to the dip in our national IQ over the last 50 years.

So what happened? Is it me…or is it the music industry? I prefer to blame the industry. They are not looking for the next Willie Nelson…and they certainly don’t sign anyone like him anymore. They would rather sign Lil Baby and Gunna, Marshmello and Bastille, Bad Bunny and DJ Snake….all current artists in Billboard’s top ten chart. I’ve never heard of any of them before..and neither has my 29-year-old afternoon personality.  And so, I make the pledge that you won’t hear them on WFIW or WOKZ in the near future.

Yes, today’s modern music stinks.

I rest my case.
