Canada, our
friend to the north, is going to totally legalize the use of marijuana. And I
think that forebodes where we are going in the good old USA.
As a
preamble, I have never smoked anything other than a Swisher Sweet cigar at a
wedding when I was 19. When I woke up the next morning it felt like my tongue
had hosted a campfire. I never did that again.
I grew up in
the 70s, and went to college where pot was omnipresent. I hated its
recreational use then…and that attitude has not changed in my old age. There is
an argument to be made for the medicinal use of pot and I will not challenge
those who have had their suffering lessened by it.
But I am one
of those fuddy duddies who is four-score against legalizing pot in Illinois or
nationally. And I will continue my right wing, Christian soaked rant until a
few things happen.
First and
foremost, science needs to provide us a way to measure just how toasted a pot
smoker is when he/she is pulled over in their car for taking out a mail box…or
heaven forbid, a human. Something a little more scientific than the desperate
need for munchies.
And please
don’t insult my intelligence by saying legalization means taxation and boy we
sure need the cash in here. We can agree on the need for revenue. But over
40-percent of the pot in Colorado is black market weed..untaxed. And for those
of you who argue legalization will cut usage…that didn’t work when we legalized
gambling. Now there’s a boat on every riverfront.
No. Can’t
get warm over legal recreational pot. Couldn’t in 1975---can’t now.
40% of pot in Colorado is black market, sure. But 100% of it sold in Illinois is. It just seems dumb to pass up the potential tax revenue, for something that has hurt literally no one, ever.
