I was caught
off guard about the profound last words of former pop idol David Cassidy. He
died in 2017, but only recently his daughter, Katie, shared her Dad’s closing
comments on Twitter.
I know very
little about Cassidy except what I saw on television’s Partridge Family and
through news reports about the demons that consumed his life.
Personally,
I was a much bigger fan of Susan Dey, who played his sister in the sitcom. But
I digress…
Cassidy
tried a few comeback concerts late in his life only to demonstrate his
inability to remember many of the words of his biggest hits. He struggled with
alcoholism and at one point appeared to have won, only to ultimately lose. He
drank to the bitter end and lied when asked about it. The official cause of
death was liver failure, again, linked to his alcoholism.
Let me get
to the point. My final words will likely be somewhat less profound. I’m likely
to say something like: “Oh, for one more Sancho.” Or, “Get this on the air before
it goes in the Press window.”
Here’s what
David Cassidy said before he died.
“So much
wasted time.” Four words.
Wow. The
power of the comment made me consider how I spend my time. It made me consider
if I was doing everything with the time God has given me.
In the end,
Cassidy made more impact on me than many philosophers
have with their words. His last comments were succinct, meaningful, quotable
and they delivered a powerful message.
All from a
guy who obviously squandered his gifts.
“So much
wasted time.”
Happy Thursday Mike...
