I remember,
several years ago, having Preston Mathews opine that Fairfield should actively
market itself as a great place to “come home to retire.”
Little did
he know he was a prophet. That is a verified trend…
When I first
met the Mayor, Brent Maguire, he asked me---“Why did to move back?”
The answer
was simple. We wanted to be in a town
that felt like home. We wanted to go
to church on Sunday…to see friends out at a local restaurant. We wanted to sit
on our porch and wave at the world as it rolled by on South First Street. We
wanted Mayberry….not St. Louis.
We drank
Preston’s Kool-Aid. And honestly, we couldn’t be happier.
Fairfield is
full of friendly people.
And the new
Y-Fairfield group of young leaders is providing data to validate the idea that
the city is starting to benefit from the migration of retirees back to their
home nest. A ten question Facebook survey by Y-Fairfield revealed that over
half of the respondents agree----the city’s greatest asset is----the strong
sense of community felt here.
Of course,
there are many other conclusions from the survey like the need for jobs. Y-Fairfield
is a new generation of leaders who want to do their part to keep Fairfield
viable into the future.
Identifying
the influx of retirees is a good start in understanding how to mesh the
generations in a unified effort to keep Fairfield friendly…
For all
ages.
