Junk Cars Multiply If Left Alone

 

An interesting thing happened this week at the Wayne City Village Board meeting. The trustees unanimously approved a new ordinance which declares inoperable motor vehicles to be a nuisance. The new ordinance spells out what happens when the owner of a junk car gets a ticket from a village police officer.

Among the things….the vehicle will be impounded. The person who violates the ordinance will be fined between $150 and  $750 for each offense. The ordinance states that the owner will also have to pay the towing bill. Kudos to the leaders in Wayne City.

Well, that’s interesting considering we have a problem with inoperable cars dotting the landscape of Fairfield. I’ve been bothered by junk vehicles that haven’t moved since I moved back two years ago. Like rabbits, junk cars seem to multiply if left alone.

We have been promised that will change with the new municipal court coming to town in the next few months. It is supposed to deal with junk cars and dilapidated property.  The goal was to deal with the problems in a cost effective way. I sure hope that is the case and we see action in our neighborhoods. Otherwise, what was the point in establishing it in the first place?

In the meantime, I was most so impressed with the exact wording of the new Wayne City ordinance, I thought it would be a good addition in Fairfield. But then I found out where the wording came from.

I guess having an ordinance and enforcing an ordinance…are two different things.
