The Political Mask

I have a former friend on Facebook who I have decided not to suffer anymore.

The formal blocking was a long time coming, but it happened abruptly when she suggested that the use of masks in public is splitting along partisan lines. In so many words, she suggested only smart liberals cover their face. Rube Republicans don’t.
First of all----for an educator, your research is strangely flawed, my dear. In fact it isn’t research at all.

Even Politico, the Washington insider blog, suggests conservatives will soon be burning their masks like 1960s protesters burned bras. I don’t buy the mask as a political symbol, but that is certainly what an increasing number of people would have you believe.

I wear a mask going into contained areas… Carry it around in my back pocket.  I don’t wear it to make a political statement. I do it to show respect to others….and maybe to take a simple step to possibly protect  myself. I’m not any less courageous than people who go mask-less. I’d like to think of myself as daring in that I haven’t missed a day of reporting here when I could have done everything from home.

My mask comes off when I feel like it….not because I’m taking orders from any political leader….right or left.

So, my friend, the next time you choose to look down your nose at me---you’ll see a mask looking right back at ya.
