This is a
story of courage and cowardice.
I have never
personally met Amber Miller. She is the lone Wayne County resident battling the
coronavirus in seclusion. Late last week she posted details of her positive
test on Facebook. At the radio station we did not reveal her identity. I sent
her a personal message saying we were all thinking about her.
Yesterday
morning, she responded to me and told me about her fight. That’s the courageous
part of this story. She has fought through 104-plus fever and, while stable,
says each day gets more challenging. She gave me permission to talk about this…
Amber is a
healthcare worker passionate about her job and the people she served at a Mt.
Vernon extended care center. She was diagnosed early last week. Her heart was
broken when she learned of the outbreak at the facility over the weekend.
While most
in this county have been incredibly compassionate, leaving food, drink, and money
on her doorstep----there have been some that I’m ashamed to tell you about.
Some have
bashed her for not taking precautions. She says she did. Others have alleged
she went out shopping for non-essentials. Again, not true, according to Amber.
What brand
of fool writes—or makes such an
allegation---when a young healthcare professional is fighting for her life
every day?
God Bless
Amber Miller. Please give her strength…and please give me the patience to
tolerate those who wish her anything less.
