Smoking will
kill you. Driving recklessly at a high rate of speed is risky. But a Washington
Post article has enlightened me to a highly preventable death.
A recent
study reports over 250 deaths due to….selfies…..the act of taking one’s picture
using a smart phone. And authorities believe there have been many, many more
that are undocumented.
I have never
been a big selfie guy. My arms aren’t long enough for the most desirable photo
composition…and quite frankly….when I look at a selfie, I see an overweight,
bald, old guy. There aren’t enough editing tools on my phone to change that
reality.
The thought
that we have to be cognizant of stupid places to take self photos is an
indictment of our modern society. The only reason people take risky selfies is
to get more “likes” on social media. For example…
..taking a
selfie in front of an oncoming train---or backing up to a gorge----or with a grizzly
bear over your shoulder----all incredibly stupid-----all documented as ways
people have died in the act of taking their own pictures.
I get it if
you run into Melania Trump at the produce section of Save-a-Lot. A selfie with
her would be totally in order. But backing up too much while standing on a
cliff in the Yosemite National Park, which claimed the life of an 18-year-old
last September---is just inane.
For a
moment, please consider your personal well-being over a million hits on
Instagram. No one will see the great video of the oncoming Norfolk Southern if
it crushes you…and your I-phone.
God gave you
a brain. Use it.
