I have met
and talked many times with Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin in my news and
education careers and I have always been impressed with his intellect and
vigor. But I so fundamentally disagree with him on so many matters. Let me take
just a few moments to point out two.
Durbin this
week said he was for a constitutional amendment to scrap the Electoral College.
I always say…if you can’t win…..change the rules. This effort by Durbin has
zero chance of being successful. It would take two-thirds majorities in both
the House and Senate and then three-quarters of the states would need to
ratify. Not possible….and so….I conclude he is merely grandstanding.
Durbin said,
and I quote “the electoral college was a relic from a shameful period in our
nation’s history. “
Let’s talk
shame…. Durbin, a Roman Catholic, is banned by his own church from taking communion.
Earlier this year Bishop John Paprock of the diocese of Springfield said Durbin
would be blocked if he sought the sacrament. The action came after the Senator
voted against the Pain-Capable Unborn Children’s Act which would have banned
abortions nationwide after 20 weeks. The bill failed. Durbin was once pro-life.
Not anymore…
So, babies are dying and Dick Durbin is
pursuing a ridiculous unwinnable effort to change the way we elect presidents.
I wish the
Senator had the same zest for one of my pet issues.
Federal term
limits for Congress….
BINGO!
