Waiting For A Bailout

Remember back in May when the state legislature met for only four days and cranked out a spending plan that was 7-and-a-half percent larger than the previous year?

Remember how they built the whole budget on the premise that the federal government would give them billions of dollars in assistance because of the pandemic?

If you don’t…let me remind you. If you think the current administration in Washington is going to subsidize the fiscal mismanagement of the state of Illinois by sending a check, think again.

Tuesday our governor engaged in a scare tactic to lay the groundwork for his “fair tax” which would generate new revenue for a state that just can’t get enough.  J.B. Pritzker said if Congress didn’t send money, the state would be in the middle of a “nightmare scenario.”

He said all manner of public jobs would be cut, even police. I found that interesting since his party seems to embrace the idea of less cops around.

No, Republicans in the U.S. Senate and in the White House will not bail Illinois out. The pandemic isn’t to blame…rather it’s decades of lousy leadership in Illinois.

The governor sees two things happening in November to save the state…a new president and a new graduated Illinois tax plan.

You have to admire his optimism.
