Brent
Maguire says he missed the classroom. I understand.
He sought
and was offered a job at a University. He accepted.
I like the
Mayor. I did not agree with his stance on some issues but reasonable people can
disagree without personal animosity.
One of
things which bothered me the most was his handling of the TIF issue. I
understand that the deal was brokered by a former mayor. Forty percent of the
money collected for the account was turned over to the other taxing bodies
initially. Maguire took all of it. The
schools barked the loudest.
While
Maguire finally came around, it harmed the city’s reputation with their partners.
And for some reason, the acceptance that all the taxing bodies continue in an
adversarial relationship, is simply wrong minded. Fairfield is in trouble. The
TIF issue merely exacerbated the lack of harmony which exists among the people
who get our tax money.
We also
disagreed on the need for a new administrator at city hall. The buck stops at
the Mayor’s desk. Whoever wants the job needs to understand that. They also
need to understand that the full-time job receives part-time pay.
The council will now pick from their own
someone to lead for the remainder of the unexpired term. Reports are that many
of the current aldermen are interested. It would be an opportunity for an
alderman to be named “mayor pro-tem,” resign his seat on the council….and run
as an incumbent in the spring.
That means the
power brokers in our little town are working overtime.
