On Tuesday,
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said he would do everything within his power to
stop federal agents from coming to Chicago. Wednesday he said he welcomed
legitimate resources from the feds to reduce violence. What happened in
between?
A drive-by
gang shooting in the Windy City where 14 people were hit in a continuing cycle
of violence.
Mayor Lori
Lightfoot tweeted Tuesday night that she would not allow the president to send
in his “troops” to “terrorize” her city.
Meanwhile, our
two U.S. Senators, Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth chimed in calling on the
president to refrain. They are part of new legislation in the Senate called the
Preventing Authoritarian Policing Tactics on American Streets Act. They appear
particularly disturbed that federal agents use unmarked cars when working. I
guess it makes them more difficult to firebomb.
Look,
Chicago, Portland, Seattle, New York, Oakland and several other cities with
Democrats in charge are out of control. But let’s just focus on Chicago for the
moment. If I were the mayor.. the governor….or a member of the legislature….I’d
welcome the feds. In fact, I would have mobilized the National Guard weeks ago.
Put aside
the partisanship. Order must be restored. The streets must be reclaimed. Anyone
who tells you differently wants the violence to continue.
The Governor
changed his tune in one day.
Maybe one day too late.
