I am not binge-watching
entire seasons of television series in one sitting. But I have come to one
solid conclusion as I nest at the Dreith-a-rosa. There are few heroes in modern
day streaming television.
We just
finished six seasons of a Netflix series, Longmire. It was the story of a
Sheriff in Wyoming. Robert Taylor plays the Sheriff and his character is
generally likable. He has morals and is predictably honest.
Good luck
finding a character like that. More likely a junior high teacher who decides to
make meth. We passed on that one.
We have
landed on a series called Ozark. Let me tell you about the lead characters.
Jason
Bateman plays a finance guy who launders money for a Mexican drug cartel. His
wife is having an affair. They relocate to the Lake of The Ozarks to try and
find a better place to wash mob cash. So, there isn’t much to like about them.
It does make you feel fortunate to just be living in the middle
of a pandemic crisis. Sheltering in place is child’s play compared to having a
drug lord breathing down your neck.
It is an era
of the anti-hero when I was raised with identifiable heroes.
John Wayne.
Gary Cooper. Jimmy Stewart…gone…and so is the strong likable lead character.
Name one.
(Silence) I rest my case.
