Finally,
something where everyone agrees. Finally, a bi-partisan piece of legislation
which is long overdue.
Last week
the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill which will make animal cruelty
a federal felony. The Preventing Animal Cruelty Torture Act, or PACT Act,
prohibits animal abuse known as “crushing”---torturing animals in numerous
ways, typically small animals such as kittens and puppies. Many times, the
sickos who do this also video tape it…and post it on the Internet. That’s a
felony. The actual act isn’t…
Finally, a
measure everyone can get behind. Burning, drowning, suffocating, impaling and
or other forms of torture would also be banned.
Why hasn’t
this been enacted decades ago?
As our
government grinds to a halt waiting for impeachment proceedings, it is amazing
that something….anything is being done. This act brought everyone together for
a brief moment.
The PACT Act
is destined to become law. But there is a broader problem in our nation and our
neighborhood. Each year 6-to-8 million dogs and cats are waiting to be adopted
at shelters. Here, In Wayne County the Humane Society shelter is full. I
checked----there are 16 available dogs….and 22 cats. They can use litter and
cleaning supplies, if you are so inclined.
I live for
the day that torturing animals is a felony. It is coming. Anyone who would harm
a defenseless animal is beyond contempt.
I also live
for a day when the Pearl Foval Shelter has a vacancy sign out front.
