Don't Blame The Cops...

I read a social media post this week that led me to believe Fairfield has become a lawless city with rogue dogs running loose—attacking other animals at will—as the police department stands idly by…doing nothing.

Does Fairfield have an animal problem?

Yes, the Wayne County Humane Society shelter is pretty much full. In fact, they are having an open house on Saturday for you to come and adopt their furry residents. But to suggest the problem is the police department, is, I believe, an overreach.

If you let your dog or cat run free, you are in violation of the city ordinance that says they need to be on a leash. Yes, even cats.  If the police are called, they act. There is a paper trail that has the officers dispatched and police officers responding. If the animals are caught, they take a ride to the Humane shelter.

I found a social media post last week to be most entertaining. It started by announcing that a pit bull had killed some cats. That was true. The dog was apprehended by Fairfield Police and will probably be put down before all said and done. But the social media page rambled into all manner of hearsay and personal insults. That’s what social media has become---a place to attack others with your keyboard.

So, for the record, let me say----If you own a dog or cat, it is your responsibility to keep them from roaming town. I am confident, if an animal is reported an to Fairfield Police, they will respond.

I have two dogs who are loved, cared for and kept inside my property. If they escape, they have microchips that identify them to authorities. They are my responsibility.

I wish more people felt that way…
