I had a
conversation this week with a few of my colleagues concerning the folks who are
running for state representative or senator in our region. I had one piece of
advice for them…
They need to
understand where we live….and how we live. Do the math. I count 16 churches in Fairfield
alone…There are probably more. Check out the region’s deer harvest. It’s in the
thousands. All of those involved in the hunt and the industry are true
believers in the second amendment.
Barack Obama
was right on at least one of his most quoted comments---we do cling to our
religion and our guns.
You can be
Republican or Democrat. That doesn’t matter. But if you aren’t right in this
neck of the woods on God and guns, you probably don’t have a chance of winning
anything. And you know you are going to be asked straight up by voters…who will
be able to smell ambiguity.
Please
dispute me. Can you imagine an atheist who wants to add more restrictive gun
legislation winning in Wayne County….or Edwards….or White? I can’t. I’ll go
further and say that is likely the way it is in most rural areas in this state.
In other terms---if your opponents can move right of you on God or guns….you
have lost.
Now, for
those of you that don’t either believe in God and would like to put tighter
restrictions on gun use, please prove me wrong. Submit your petitions and get
your name on the ballot for office on a platform of being god-less and
gun-less….or just run and dodge every question that comes your way on either
topic…
Then start
writing your concession speech.
