I do not
know why anyone is shocked or surprised with the college admission scandal. Ten
years ago, the Chicago Trib did an expose called “Clout Goes to College,” where the newspaper
revealed there was a separate tier for admission to the U of I for the politically
connected.
This week, 50
people nationwide were indicted after an FBI investigation into fraudulent
college admissions. This is the story of how the privileged, the elite, Hollywood
types, used their cash to get their kids into college. It is intriguing how
they did it.
Actress Lori
Loughlin is charged with paying a half-million dollars to successfully get two
daughters into USC as members of the rowing team. Neither had ever touched an
oar. Apparently the girls were not the sharpest crayons in the box. Even more
embarrassing was one of the girls, Olivia, is somewhat of a You Tube celebrity
and posted on social media that she didn’t go to class. She told her video
audience she “wants the experience of like, game days, partying…I don’t really
care about school, as you guys know.”
A $500,000
bribe to get Olivia her share of tailgating? Mom and Dad probably bought the
keg too.
For me, the
most disturbing part of this scandal is the allegation of corruption within the
SAT and ACT tests. Students allegedly told the testing services they had learning
disabilities, then requested specific locations where their tests were greased,
correcting their plentiful wrong answers thus boosting their scores.
If
convicted, those involved need jail time.
They have done great damage to higher
education.
