Fighting At The Peace Cross

The war on Christianity in America is real. Let me cite just one example.

In 1925, the American Legion erected a memorial in Maryland to 49 soldiers who died in the First World War. The 40-foot memorial is known as “The Peace Cross.” Five years ago, the American Humanist Association filed a lawsuit alleging that the memorial was unconstitutional and demanded it be altered or demolished. The group doesn’t believe there is a God.

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in the Humanist’s favor on a 2-1 vote. The matter is currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.

I think the appellate ruling sets a dangerous precedent by interpreting the Constitution incorrectly. If the decision stands, we could see the removal or destruction of veteran’s memorials across America.

I dusted off my Constitution and----while I haven’t practiced law----I can read the free-exercise clause of the First Amendment which states that the government “shall make no law…prohibiting the free exercise of religion.”

The Peace Cross isn’t forcing religion on anyone… But this ruling threatens to deprive us of any representation of religion…. be it Christian, Muslim or Buddhism….in the public marketplace. How can that be the interpretation of the words of the founding fathers, clearly influenced by Christian teachings?

Count me as a soldier in standing up to a militant group of atheists who want to eradicate our history and our heritage.

This ruling will tell us a lot about the new conservative Supreme Court majority and their interpretation of the First Amendment.

Stay tuned.
