Surprises? Not One.

Some random thoughts about last night’s election results…

In Illinois, I think it was greatly disappointing that party leaders decided to not just choose gubernatorial candidates who were rich----but filthy rich. The campaign cost hundreds of million dollars…all out of the deep packets of the two candidates. That just meant to me that the candidates had no real understanding of what we are up against here in rural downstate.

Maybe the new governor can make some headway. It was clear that Bruce Rauner was totally thwarted at every turn by House Speaker—slash---Emperor Mike Madigan. Make no mistake who will be the big dog in the relationship between the Speaker and the new Governor. It will be the speaker and the sooner Pritzker learns that the sooner maybe some things can get done in Springfield.

I hope Pritzker’s wife leaves the toilets alone in the Mansion.

I voted at 6:01 on election day morning at the First Baptist Church. I will always vote…but quite honestly….local political leaders gave me very little reason to. Eight County Board members, unopposed----four countywide office holders, unopposed. Hey, party chairmen----find some folks who want to serve. This was ridiculous and certainly did not inspire voter participation. There was really nothing to decide.

It was like no election night I have ever experienced. If you combined the ages of my co-anchors and added them, the total did not come close to my age. I’ve been around plenty of elections. This one was totally without suspense. I can prove it.

I wrote this commentary at 5:47 in the afternoon, or over an hour before the polls closed.
