This weekend
we honor the people who made sacrifices for this country by wearing military
uniforms and sacrificing their lives for our continued freedom.
That’s why
the timing of the latest unfunny bit on “Saturday Night Live” is all the more
perplexing. Not only is the show really unfunny….it’s forays into political
commentary makes it offensive to folks like me.
On Saturday
night, in a rambling bit on Weekend Update, Pete Davidson savaged a host of
conservatives in a Weekend Update segment that didn’t even bring a smurk to my
face. It wasn’t funny.
Davidson put
up a picture of Dan Crenshaw, a retired Navy SEAL running for Congress in
Texas. Crenshaw is a bonafide hero who lost his eye when he was hit by a blast
from an IED in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
He now wears
an eye patch. Davidson described him as looking like “a hit man in a porno
movie.” When he incredibly got a laugh from the SNL live audience…he doubled
down by saying, “I’m sorry. I know he lost his eye in war---or whatever.”
Or whatever?
I guess
that’s funny in New York and LA. Here it’s not even slightly humorous.
Here’s the
remarkable part of Crenshaw’s story. Both eyes were terribly damaged and it was
believed he would be permanently blind. After several surgeries, doctors
restored one eye---a miraculous outcome---according to the head surgeon. He
went on to serve two more deployments.
Crenshaw
later tweeted---quote----“vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punch
lines for bad jokes.” Agreed. But I’ll go further…
SNL needs to
become funny again….or just fade away.
