One of the
things I learned in my first few weeks here----is----I don’t work for a radio
station-----I work for a media company. And that, was to say the least, a rude
awakening for an aging radio guy who thought he was escaping back to his past
profession.
Let me
explain. We do indeed have four radio signals covering southeastern
Illinois….but we also stream our flagship station----WFIW-FM---on the
world-wide-web. I am willing to bet there will be graduates of FCHS listening
on their phones or computers to Saturday afternoon’s playoff football game from Europe and Asia. Because, if you have a phone, you have a radio. Also Saturday, we will be dispatching regular
updates on our social media platform where we have almost 10,000 people following
our Facebook page, or twice the population of Fairfield.
Then you
move to our webpage--wfiwradio.com-- you get it all---all of the content we
generate from our newsroom and our air personalities. There’s the news
headlines---that page gets over 20,000 views a day-----and the obituaries which
are a close second.
We work hard
to update those pages as fast as we can----sometimes way ahead of broadcasting them.
And finally, our grand experiment of this past
week----our own You Tube channel featuring our talk show----Morning
Coffee---which allows listeners to become viewers. The live video stream is
found by following the link on our Facebook page and the shows are archived on
You Tube.
Not to
mention The Original Companies’ ability to do direct mail, digital advertising
and event planning. The digital footprint of what we do here is really quite
remarkable for this old analog dog…
…An old dog
that has been forced to learn new digital tricks.
